Chasing the Sound of Applause -- A Gripping Novel About a Young Man's Travails in Following His Dream

DETROIT, April 17, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- From author Julia Tolliver comes a compelling novel about a young black man who grew up in a small town, but had big dreams he never gave up on. Horny Man is what the regulars of Foxy's called Gregory Tolliver. And rightly so, for when he started playing his big saxophone, he exuded a sweet sex appeal that made the girls go crazy and had even the guys hooting for him. But as much as Greg loved the limelight, his life wasn't always as harmonious as the melodies he played.

Gregory Tolliver and his siblings tried all their lives to ignore their father's emotional and physical absence, just about as much as their mother denied it. The matriarch of the Tolliver household raised three boys and one girl mostly herself, slaving day and night keeping the house clean and decent. Even when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Gregory's mother suffered in silence, not wanting to alarm her family. Years later, when her condition required special treatment, Gregory promised to stay with his mother.

Lisa Calhoun, a sensuous woman who captured Gregory's heart, left him at the lowest point in his life when she received a promotion that required her to move to New York City. The Horny Man shifted from woman to woman, looking for, but never finding the one who could replace Lisa. His stints at the small town joint became monotonous and he started yearning for something bigger-a vision that he always saw in his dreams.

Horny Man is a gripping novel about facing devastating odds before realizing one's dream. Readers can take a piece from Gregory Tolliver's life about patience, determination, and the enduring familial love that may be crippling at times, but also truly comforting.
