Girl Stumbles Upon Her Family's Dark Secrets -- New Book Tells the Story of a Young Girl's Quest

WINCHESTER, Va., April 23, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Behind an old, established and successful family lies dark little secrets, sorrows and regrets which claim the energies of their obsolete generation. In the midst of this family's aloofness, a lonely yet spirited young girl finds refuge and sanctuary in a grandmother she fondly calls "Nammy." Follow the fascinating story of Joanna in Calico Jam, a heartwarming read by author Joanne Greene and released through Xlibris.

Joanna is a lonely, curious, and spirited young girl. She was born during the Great Depression of the 1930s, when children were tolerated but not taken very seriously. Her journal became her companion and source of comfort. She first came to spend her summers with Nammy at her farm Edgecomb when she was eleven years old.

Joanna tries to understand her part in a family tragedy that is destroying her mother and alienating her father. She turns to Nammy, self-exiled from her family, who lives at her remote farm, Edgecomb, in upstate New York, with her second husband and child. Haunted by the memories of her lost brother, Joanna becomes fixed on her grandmother's young handicapped son. Finally, at her most vulnerable, Joanna finds an unexpected tutor in Alonzo, the remarkable husband of her grandmother, whose wisdom and humor pull her back to a safer place.

Calico Jam is the unforgettable story of a young girl's odyssey in life. She grows up, still trying to understand, and still trying to go back to where she was welcomed and sheltered. Joanna: wise and foolish, happy and sad, curious and afraid, continues on.

About the Author

Joanne Greene was born during the Great Depression to very young parents. When she grew into adulthood, she went into the business world for practical reasons, putting aside her childhood dreams of becoming a writer. At age twenty-one, she married and temporarily retired from the business world to raise a family. After her husband succumbed to cancer at the age of forty-five, Joanne was left alone to care for nine children. After the money ran out, she started attending college and returned to the workforce. They survived on a modest salary and survivor's benefits. Now that her children have grown and she has remarried, she began to write essays and poetry for a local alternative paper, which is published in the New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts area while she and her new husband were maintaining Bed-and Breakfast in upstate New York. Since retirement, the couple moved to Shenandoah Valley in Virginia where she continues to write. The author is currently working on a collection of stories, which should be ready for publication in the fall.
