About the Author

John William Follows was born in London in 1908 and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his BA in Political Science at the University of Wisconsin. He then attained the equivalent of a master's degree after two years of study at Oxford under Alfred Zimmern. He earned his Ph.D. at Cornell University with the thesis "Antecedents of the International Labor Organization."

Mr. Follows taught history for several years at New York University. He worked for the government during the depression and for the War Labor Board during World War II. During the forties and fifties, he was in the furniture business. Then he became an associate professor of history at Hofstra University until he retired. This book is a composite of his lectures at Hofstra for his course in western civilization.
