Release of a Voting Rights announcement

On 23 July 2009 Capital Research and Management Company, Los Angeles, USA,
has informed us pursuant to section 21 (1) WpHG in connection with section
22 (1) sent. 1 no. 6 WpHG of the following: On 21 July 2009, the stake of
Capital Research and Management Company in the voting rights in RWE AG,
Essen, Deutschland, fell below the threshold of 5 %. On that date, Capital
Research and Management Company held 4.99 % (26,095,465 ordinary shares) in
relation to all voting rights in RWE AG (voting rights arising from
523,405,000 ordinary shares (Stammaktien)).

4.99 % (26,095,465 ordinary shares) of all voting rights in RWE AG (voting
rights arising from 523,405,000 ordinary shares) were attributed to Capital
Research and Management Company pursuant to section 22 (1) sent. 1 no. 6
WpHG.
