FINNAIR OYJ STOCK EXCHANGE RELEASE OCTOBER 7, 2009 AT 09:00 Finnair's cargo traffic grew in September by more than one per cent compared with the previous September. The amount of cargo carried fell by one per cent, but in Asian traffic the amount of cargo grew by two per cent. “In terms of cargo, it seems that the bottom has been reached. As far as passenger traffic is concerned, this can't yet be said. Scheduled passenger traffic's unit revenues in passenger kilometres declined in the third quarter by 12 per cent,” says Finnair's SVP Communications Christer Haglund. In September, Finnair's scheduled passenger traffic declined by nearly 11 per cent compared with the previous year. Capacity was cut correspondingly, so the load factor remained at the previous year's level of more than 76 per cent. Asian traffic declined by nearly 12 per cent and capacity was cut correspondingly. The load factor remained at the previous year's level of nearly 85 per cent. North American traffic grew by nearly ten per cent. Capacity expanded by 15 per cent, due to an increased flight frequency to New York, so the load factor fell four percentage points to nearly 80 per cent. European traffic declined by 12 per cent and capacity by the same amount, so load factor remained at nearly 68 per cent. Domestic traffic was down by 13 per cent, with capacity cut by nearly ten per cent, resulting in a load factor that was more than eight percentage points lower at nearly 59 per cent. Leisure traffic fell by nearly 30 per cent from the previous year and capacity contracted by more than 22 per cent, which reduced the load factor by more than eight percentage points to less than 78 per cent. “In leisure traffic demand is expected to fall further, so we will cut capacity to match demand,” says Haglund. Of Finnair's flights, 91 per cent arrived on schedule in September, which represents an improvement of seven and a half percentage points from last year. Scheduled traffic's punctuality percentage rose from September last year by more than seven percentage points to 92 per cent.
