2009 was an extremely difficult financial year for the German
machine-building industry as a whole as well as for the Klöckner Group.
Incoming orders declined by 10.5 %. The order situation was unsatisfactory
at most of the subsidiaries, especially in the first half of the year.
However, growth was recorded in India, China, South Africa and Brazil over
the course of the year. A slight trend reversal was seen towards the end of
the year, especially following the important 'drinktec' trade fair.
Due to weak incoming orders, Group sales were down by 28.6 % year-on-year
to a total of EUR 753.7 million. Of this amount, 90.3 % is attributable to
the Filling and Packaging Technology segment and 9.7 % to the Other
Industrial Holdings segment.
The Klöckner Group's results of operations were significantly weaker
year-on-year, mainly due to the effects of the economic crisis.
Reported EBIT was negatively impacted to a large extent by impairments of
EUR 70.2 million and restructuring expenses of EUR 25.2 million. EBIT was
EUR -104.7 million after adjustment for these effects.
After taxes and interest, the consolidated result was EUR -189.8 million
(Previous year: EUR -35.8 million). The impairments as well as the
significant restructuring expenses (which financed organisational measures
to improve internal business processes) will considerably improve the
international competitive position of the Group and especially of
subsidiary KHS AG.
The complete annual financial statements of the Klöckner Group are to be
released on Friday, March 19, 2010 and will be presented at the press
conference on this date.
