Microsemi Expands Backlight Controller Family Featuring Third-Generation PureBLACK(TM) Mega-Contrast Dimming Technology

Now Available for 24-Volt CCFL Inverter Solutions in LCD Panel Designs

IRVINE, Calif., March 3, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading manufacturer of high performance analog/mixed signal integrated circuits and high reliability semiconductors, today introduced a new CCFL controller featuring mega-contrast dimming for 24-volt cold cathode fluorescent light (CCFL) inverter applications in small- to large-sized LCD displays.

A leader in large-screen LCD TV innovations for more than a decade, Microsemi has expanded its CCFL portfolio to include the LX6502™ full-bridge controller with integrated 12V gate drivers and patented third-generation PureBLACKTM technology. The backlight controller's PureBLACK technology sets new standards for black levels, dynamic contrast, image uniformity, reliability and protection, and reduces overall bill of material (BOM) costs.

"Microsemi now offers a full suite of PureBLACKdevices for any display application, whether HV-LIPS or traditional 24V inverter architectures," said Tom Kapucija, director of marketing with Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group. "Following the successful adoption of our LX6503A™ and LX6523A™ PureBLACK devices in HV-LIPS solutions by top TV manufacturers, we are now excited to add this new device to our CCFL inverter controller family. The LX6502 gives LCD panel manufacturers and other OEMs yet another option for using our mega-contrast dimming technology to deliver high-end image quality with superior black levels and increased dynamic contrast."

Microsemi's LX6502 inverter brings advanced mega-contrast dimming to large-screen displays with fully integrated on-chip 12V gate drivers to support full-bridge, high- and low-side N-channel power MOSFET configurations with input voltages to 35V. An integrated on-chip voltage regulator with under-voltage lockout protection further minimizes the overall system BOM costs. Additional BOM cost reductions are enabled by a fully integrated suite of protection functions that include soft-start, direct duty cycle control with maximum duty limiting, and over-current and over-voltage protection.

The LX6502 enables quick design turns with its flexible and user-configurable feature set. Programmable lamp-frequency operation is further enhanced with high-accuracy, user-programmable burst-dimming and strike-frequency control, as well as programmable strike and open-lamp protection. Also included is a synchronization (SYNC) function with selectable frequency ratio, frequency limit, auto detect, and synchronization. This helps to improve image quality by eliminating inverter interference effects on the video signals.

The LX6502 controller integrates all necessary functionality for LCD TV or monitor displays in a single controller that also provides reliable lamp striking, comprehensive brightness control modes (including analog and pulse-width modulation burst dimming) and support for 24V inverter topologies in existing backlight applications. The LX6502 controller features tighter lamp current accuracy as compared to competitive solutions.
