Each year some 15 million tons of CO2 emissions could be saved if the innovative electrolyte mixing feature in the ECO batteries from iQ Power and the vastly improved efficiency of the electrochemistry that comes with it were the universal standard for automotive starter batteries. In terms of fuel, these savings correspond to the equivalent capacity of 25 supertankers full of gasoline. The innovative technology behind automatic electrolyte mixing, an invention patented by iQ Power, not only reduces CO2 emissions, but also what until now has been that typical loss of battery capacity caused by acid stratification. This capacity loss can be as serious as 40 percent in conventional starter batteries. Electrolyte mixing is how ECO batteries from iQ Power ensure both a consistently superior starting capability and a longer service life. As if these benefits were not enough, iQ Power also backs up its products with a 3-year warranty. iQ Power batteries with electrolyte mixing require less lead than today's conventional starter batteries, which in turn reduces the weight of ECO batteries by 15 to 22 percent or several kilograms depending on the type. In a world market of about 220 million car batteries a year, this weight advantage represents the potential for saving some 1 million tons of lead each year, a figure that corresponds to about 11.5 percent of the global demand for this commodity. Some 8.6 million tons of lead were consumed worldwide in 2008 of which about 6 million tons were processed for use in car batteries. At lead's current market price of $2,300 per ton, this amount of raw material saved has a commodity value of approximately $2.3 billion. 'By using our batteries, car makers can conserve resources and lower their vehicles' weight and fuel consumption, while simultaneously reducing the carbon emissions of their fleet,' was how iQ Power AG CEO Charles Robert Sullivan explained the benefits for OEMs. Besides high quality and longer product warranties, ecological considerations are becoming an increasingly important factor in purchasing decisions. 'Consumers and buyers are paying more attention to ecologically sound products that deliver outstanding value for the money as a way of making an active contribution to safeguarding the environment,' continued Sullivan. The steadily rising demand for more efficient automobiles is just one facet of the direction highlighted by this trend. 'We believe that this trend has only just begun, and that we are superbly positioned to respond to and satisfy this change in consumer behavior with our environmentally sound, technologically advanced and economical starter batteries,' emphasized Sullivan. 'Consequently, we have put our European sales activities into high gear following the successful sales start-up in Germany in order to accommodate the growing demand from other parts of Europe.'
