LOS ANGELES, March 22, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- District Attorney Steve Cooley today declared diabetes a crime, and has joined the American Diabetes Association in its movement to STOP DIABETES. Cooley will be the honoree at the 13th Annual Los Angeles Political Roast featuring Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti, City Attorney Carmen Trutanich, and LA County Supervisor Gloria Molina as primary "roasters."

Acknowledging that 24 million people in the U.S. now have diabetes, including 1 in 10 people in Los Angeles County, Cooley stated, "Diabetes has reached epidemic status and is one of the country's leading killers. This disease is actively stealing lives and costing our citizens millions of dollars," he continued. "Diabetes is a crime, and I am proud to join the American Diabetes Association in the fight to STOP DIABETES."

Since 1998 the Los Angeles Political Roast benefitting the American Diabetes Association has provided state, county and local officials the opportunity to gently…and not so gently roast their fellow elected officials in the spirit of generosity and dedication to the fight against Diabetes. Past honorees have included Los Angeles County Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky (1999), Yvonne Braithwaite Burke (2001), Don Knabe (2003), Gloria Molina (2008); Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca (2005); City Controller Wendy Greuel (2009) and others.

The Los Angeles Political Roast was created by American Diabetes Association Board Members and event Co-Chairs Arnie Berghoff, Harvey Englander and Mitchell Englander and stands as one of the organization's most unique and successful annual fundraising events.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information, and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the Association has offices in every region of the country providing services in more than 800 communities.
