Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Chooses Cerner for Consumer-Focused Healthcare Technology

KANSAS CITY, Mo. and ANCHORAGE, Alaska, March 23, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) has chosen Cerner Corporation (Nasdaq:CERN) to implement healthcare information technology (HIT) solutions throughout their campus. The Cerner® solutions being deployed will assist in automating paper processes in nearly every area of the ANMC, making the overall goal of personalized patient care from a leaner, more efficient system, a reality.

"We chose Cerner because they understand that the real beneficiary of this technology is the person who will be receiving personalized care," said Dan Neumeister, ANMC administrator. "For more than 30 years, Cerner has shared our vision for better population health through wellness and prevention, which we view as a critical focal point for a healthy tribal community for generations to come."

ANMC will be seamlessly automated from registration and scheduling to computerized physician order entry (CPOE). The ANMC's automation benefits will extend into the community with a Cerner solution that allows patients to securely and electronically communicate with their provider while allowing providers to manage the electronic health records (EHR) of patients located outside the community.

"The ANMC was looking for an innovative, consumer-focused system that extends high-quality healthcare beyond the four walls of the hospital and into the community where each individual can access their personal health information anytime from anywhere," said Mike Valentine, Cerner chief operating officer.

The consumer is not the only one that benefits from the implementation of Cerner solutions; providers will experience a transformation in the way they are able to deliver care. Some of those benefits include:

  • The use of CPOE to communicate, receive and document patient care decisions more efficiently and effectively;
  • Reducing error with Five Rights checking during medication administration through bar-code verification for each patient, ensuring the right drug, patient, dose, time and route all match;
  • The use of Cerner's CareAware™ solution, linking information from medical devices in critical care units directly to a patient's EHR; helping to eliminate the need for nurses to manually enter patient information;
  • Cerner's PowerChart™ Maternity solution, which enhances the level of care and attention to both mother and child, helping to eliminate duplicate entry documentation.

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium is a non-profit health organization owned and managed by Alaska Native tribal governments and their regional health organizations. The Consortium was created in 1997 to provide statewide Native health services and is primarily funded through government grants. Southcentral Foundation was established in 1982 as the non-profit healthcare affiliate of Cook Inlet Region Inc. to work together with the Native Community to achieve wellness through health and related services.  The two organizations jointly manage the ANMC, a 150-bed tertiary care center and Alaska's first and only Magnet Hospital, which recognizes quality patient care and nursing excellence. The ANMC is also the only tribally-operated hospital with Magnet Status© in the United States.

The technology is expected to be available in October 2011, positively impacting more than 55,000 lives in the Anchorage region.
