SourceForge Now Offers Free, Global Distribution Service to Every Open Source Project

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 13, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SourceForge, a Geeknet (Nasdaq:LNUX) web site and the leading resource for open source software development and distribution, today announced the launch of SourceForge Downloads, a free, global download service that allows developers to distribute any open source project regardless of where its software is developed.

Built with input from leading open source project administrators and developers, SourceForge Downloads provides access to the largest, free, managed global mirror network. The service also increases a project's visibility by being listed on the leading open source software directory, SourceForge.

"SourceForge has long been instrumental in the creation and adoption of open source software by providing collaboration and development tools. This new service will further drive open source adoption by increasing the visibility and availability of grass-roots applications," said Scott Collison, Chief Product Officer of Geeknet. "By opening the download service to any project that uses an open source license, developers will be able to drive more distribution of their software."

In addition to providing projects with increased external visibility, SourceForge Downloads also includes a new series of robust reporting tools and controls. Project administrators and developers can receive key statistics on a project's performance, all free of charge. These reporting tools allow developers to view anonymous user information, such as geographic location and computing platform, which can be applied to future feature development and application releases.
