Apigee Provides Heroku Developers With Improved Access to Twitter API; Announces 'Social App Smackdown' Developer Event

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - May 27, 2010) -  Apigee, a free API tools platform, today announced improved Twitter API access for Heroku developers with the public beta availability of the Apigee for Twitter Heroku Add-on. Heroku, the leading Ruby cloud Platform-as-a-Service provider, and Apigee also announced Social App Smackdown, a joint event for new and experienced developers working on Twitter and Facebook applications.

The Apigee for Twitter Heroku Add-on enables Heroku developers to quickly access the Twitter API through Apigee for improved Twitter API rate limits when using OAuth authentication. Combined with Heroku's fully-managed multi-tenant platform and powerful Add-on catalog, Ruby developers are now able to add powerful functionality, scale and deploy their Twitter apps with ease.

In addition, Apigee will soon provide API analytics capabilities through Apigee's Heroku Add-ons, allowing developers to get detailed information on usage, performance, response time, geolocation of users and more.

"Heroku's Add-on system enables developers to utilize advanced features in their Web applications with a single click," said Oren Teich, vice president, Heroku. "The Apigee Add-on makes it possible for our large community of Twitter developers to instantly build applications that can scale on the front end and ensure they will not hit rate limits, creating a great user experience."

As part of their partnership, Heroku and Apigee are also collaborating to put on "Social App Smackdown," a hacker event for new and experienced developers working on Twitter and Facebook apps. Experienced coders can show off their social apps while new app developers will learn from the best. The event will include demos, a hack-a-thon with hands-on training, a panel of leading venture capitalists and angel investors, and an apps contest at the end of the day. The event will take place Saturday, July 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Heroku offices, located in San Francisco's SOMA area. "As APIs emerge as the new basis of the Web, the Twitter and Facebook platforms have become dominant engines of the social world," said Sam Ramji, vice president, Apigee. "Social App Smackdown will provide an opportunity for these developer communities to get together to share best practices, collaborate on tips and tricks, build new innovative applications, and start new companies."
