WSJ.com First to Launch New "Add to Foursquare" Feature

NEW YORK, June 14, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Wall Street Journal Online at WSJ.com announced today the launch of a new interactive feature with Foursquare, a location-based social network. WSJ.com is the first site to launch the "Add to Foursquare," function, which appears alongside restaurant reviews and other cultural coverage on WSJ.com and allows users to populate their Foursquare to-do lists directly from articles.

Clicking the "Add to Foursquare" button on a restaurant review, for instance, will add that venue to the user's Foursquare to-do list along with a tip written by Journal editors and a direct link to the review.

"Working with a network like Foursquare is about getting the right content to the right people at the right time," said Kevin Delaney, managing editor of WSJ.com.  "By integrating Foursquare functions with Wall Street Journal editorial content, we are making that content even more relevant and useful to those who rely on our coverage to help plan their activities."

Early last month, the Journal used Foursquare for the first time to alert users to breaking news. After learning of an evacuation in Times Square, the Journal "checked in" to Times Square and included the following message: "Portions of Times Square have been evacuated after a report of a suspicious package." The message was posted in conjunction with additional alerts and coverage on WSJ.com.

The Journal began its expanded print and digital coverage of the New York City region with Foursquare in April in conjunction with the launch of the Greater New York edition. In an effort to help Journal readers explore locations around the city, Foursquare created three Wall Street Journal badges and tips related to Greater New York content (http://wsj.com/foursquare). Readers can earn badges as they check into locations around the city, including restaurants, museums and other venues.

The three badges include The Urban Adventurer badge, which can be unlocked by checking into each of the city's five boroughs. The Lunch Box badge is unlocked by checking into restaurants reviewed in the column. For readers spending time downtown, a Banker Badge can be unlocked with check-ins around the Financial District.
