The world's most successful mobile radio device for train radio communication and rail traffic control is developed in the Thuringian town of Kölleda. The 'cab radios' from Funkwerk are already installed in 19,999 trains from Norway to Saudi-Arabia and India to China. Now, the company has supplied its 20,000th mobile radio terminal for communication between train and operating centre. Funkwerk's proprietary development has thus become the leading solution in the global market for train radio communication using GSM-R. 'We are by a mile the leading cab radio producer not only in Europe, but throughout the world, because GSM-R mobile radio communication in Europe is far more advanced than anywhere else. But we are now beginning to see the demand increase in other countries as well, along with further investments in railway infrastructure. This should benefit our business over the next few years,' Dr. Hans Grundner, CEO of Funkwerk, said on the supply of the 20,000 cab radio. Train radio systems are increasingly important for the operations of railway companies. They safeguard the communication between the mobile and stationary infrastructures as one of the basic requirements for secure, punctual and reliable railway traffic. A key technological aspect that helped set the course was the agreement of railway companies to introduce GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communication for Railways) as a new standard for the transfer of rail-related information in Europe. This was a prerequisite for the progressively faster international harmonisation and the related cross-border interoperability of railway traffic required to an ever greater degree in times of globalisation. As one of the first suppliers, Funkwerk has promoted this technology change since 1999. The fact that analogue train radio technology has been developed and produced at its Kölleda facility since 1982 has stood the company in good stead. Based on these many years of experience and the detailed knowledge of user requirements, Funkwerk was quickly able to develop various ranges of modular GSM-R terminals for both analogue and digital train radio communication. 'This has helped Funkwerk gain a technological lead which we continued to extend as we entered the new millennium ,' Dr. Grundner said. Worldwide increase in demand for intelligent communication technology Once Funkwerk as a supplier of Deutsche Bahn AG gained a foothold in the global market, further major contracts followed in quick succession, from the French SNCF, the Belgian SNCB, the Swiss SBB, the Austrian ÃBB, and the Norwegian NSB. Now, railway companies in as many as 30 countries use cab radios from Funkwerk. The company's digital communication systems control data and voice communication worldwide at leading public and private transport providers. The demand for rail communication technology 'made by Funkwerk in Germany' should further increase in the future. 'Key factors such as efficiency, the prevention of emissions and increased transport security are vital for any railway company. To improve these, however, you need intelligent communication tech-nology. This is why investments in this sector are on the increase. Innovative, individual system solutions such as provided by Funkwerk are a focal point here,' Funkwerk's CEO Dr. Hans Grundner said on the current trend. 'It has taken us a good ten years to supply the 20,000th cab radio; I'm sure we will be able to deliver the 40,000th in half the time.'
