Cengage Learning Provides Faculty Development at the 2010 College Survival Conference

TeamUP Faculty Event Highlights Strategies to Improve Engagement and Student Success

STAMFORD, Conn., July 21, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cengage Learning, a leading global provider of innovative teaching, learning and research solutions, today announced the success of its 2010 College Survival Conference, a professional development and networking event attended by over 100 new and experienced instructors from across the country. College Survival: A Monumental Movement was held last month in the Washington D.C. area as a part of Cengage Learning's ongoing effort to provide faculty with professional development opportunities through its TeamUP Faculty Programs Group.

The conference focused on providing instructors with strategies that will effectively engage today's students, utilizing innovative new methods for curriculum design and course implementation. The instructors in attendance had the opportunity to learn from nationally recognized authors, colleagues and Cengage Learning TeamUP Faculty Program Consultants as they presented strategies for student success. In addition to the sessions, there were many opportunities for networking and socializing, including a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol building given by keynote speaker and former U.S. Rep. Ed Bethune of Arkansas.

"At a time when training budgets are being cut, it is more important than ever to provide instructors with professional development opportunities. Our TeamUP events for faculty are designed to inspire instructors with practical, ready-to-use strategies that will help them to be more effective in the classroom," said David Gillespie, vice president, Strategy, Training and Development, Cengage Learning. "Our recent event in Washington D.C. welcomed a range of new and experienced instructors to sessions exploring ways to energize teaching methods for improved student success, as well as to a host of peer networking events."

Carolyn Sanders, a conference attendee from the University of Alabama, Huntsville said, "As a new First Year Experience director, this conference provided me with a wonderful crash course in student success – a means to totally immerse myself in a broad variety of meaningful, practical topics."

Over the past 15 years, TeamUP Faculty Programs offerings -- peer-to-peer consultations, workshops and professional development conferences -- have exposed instructors to new ways to better engage students. These programs are staffed by a team of full-time consultants and faculty advisors who are educators in a diverse range of subject areas. These experts are available to share their experiences using Cengage Learning solutions and instructional best practices developed in the classroom.
