Business Journalists Host Fed's New York Chief, COO of NYSE in Revived SABEW Fall Conference

More Than 100 Expected at CUNY's Graduate J-School Oct. 1-2

PHOENIX, Aug. 11, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Top executives of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the New York Stock Exchange, Starwood Hotels and the airline JetBlue join several national business journalists in the revived fall conference of the nation's largest association of business newspeople.

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers will present "Economy in Recovery," Oct. 1-2 at the City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism in midtown Manhattan. The 2009 conference was not held due to the devastating effects of the recession on the media industry.

More than 100 journalists are expected to attend. Early-bird registration rates expire Aug. 30. Details below.

Conference sessions begin Oct. 1 with an address by William C. Dudley, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Plus, Starwood CEO Frits Van Paasschen and JetBlue COO Rob Maruster will offer predictions for the future of tourism.

There's much more:

• New York Stock Exchange chief operating officer Larry Liebowitz headlines a panel discussion on Wall Street breaking news.

• Hear experts discuss the early ramifications of health care reform in a panel headed by freelance journalist and editor Elizabeth McBride.

• How bad are state and local governments' finances? Robert Ward of the Rockefeller Institute and CUNY journalism professor Greg David will give detailed perspectives.

• Attendees will learn how to read government statistics directly from officials from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They may find out that they've been computing Gross Domestic Product the wrong way for a long time!

• Conference attendees will not want to miss the Oct. 1 lunchtime debate between Jonathan Weil of Bloomberg News and Charlie Gasparino of Fox Business News, two of the most outspoken journalists on Wall Street, giving their uncensored views of financial regulation – and the next big financial bombshell.

• And the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism will present at our event a special full-day workshop Oct. 2, "Produce a Business News Video in a Day," that will do just that, even for the complete novice. Separate registration required. Signup information is at sabew.org or businessjournalism.org.

Plus, attendees will be invited to two evening receptions at the headquarters of Reuters (Sept. 30) and Bloomberg News (Oct. 1)

Early-bird registration at sabew.org will close Aug. 30. SABEW members can register at the early-bird rate of $149 for two days of workshops and social/networking receptions (non-members' early rate is $199; students' is $50). Also available on sabew.org: How to reserve a $235/night hotel room at the nearby Sheraton Four Points – Times Square (this rate also goes up after Aug. 30).
