City Telecom CXO Management Reflections From "Karate Kid"

HONG KONG, Aug. 23, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- City Telecom (HK) Limited (HKSE:1137) (Nasdaq:CTEL).

Our "CXO of the Future" Management Trainees, Vintage '09 are now over one year into their program. It is awesome to see how they are maturing on an accelerated basis over this period, which is very evident as we read their updated Booklet of CXO Reading Reflections, over a 12 month period.  The full booklet can be downloaded at http://ir.ctigroup.com.hk/eng/ir/presentations/pre100823.pdf

For a bit of fun, we look beyond standard business books for inspiration. One such example is the insights gained from studying the1980's classic "Karate Kid" movie.  "Daily practices of the boy are car washing, painting the fence, etc. After a while, Daniel-San becomes frustrated at doing household chores rather than learning to fight. Later on, when his master tests him to defend himself, it is only then that Daniel-San realizes the purpose of the car washing and painting acts." Zoe Wong, MT'09.  For our CXOs, we see a similar situation.  Given their relative youth and inexperience, we expect that a lot of their current exposures will not become meaningful until a much later stage in their management development.

With reference to Steve Job's Stanford commence speech http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF8uR6Z6KLc we hope that via our CXO program exposure, our CXOs will enhance their ability to "collect and connect" the dots.  Over the past twelve months our CXOs have been exposed to:

  • Job rotation through our entire operations, to develop a holistic view of how our business is managed
  • Shadowing our CEO, William Yeung, and special project placement with our Chairman, Ricky Wong
  • Numerous opportunities to network with external senior executives, including trips to Japan, Beijing, Singapore, etc.
  • Attempts at CFA Level 1

For an update on our 2010 CXO recruitment, we shortlisted from a base of 795 applicants to 17, whom we invited to a two day, one night outward bound experience.  Eventually, we made one offer but was declined by the candidate.  As we prefer to keep our standard high, we did not make alternative offers, rather we will now focus our attention on the 2011 CXO search.  For a short video on the Outward Bound selection experience, please refer to http://www.youtube.com/user/HKBNatUTube.
