Geeknet Launches Feedery: A Recommendation Engine That Tailors News to Individuals

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 16, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Geeknet (Nasdaq:GKNTD) a company with a portfolio of web sites and web services that cater to tech-savvy people, today announced the launch of Feedery, a new website with a recommendation engine that tailors news to individuals.

Feedery is a collection of RSS feeds about technology, programming, design, startups and more. Every time a user logs in, the latest stories are pulled and sorted by a powerful recommendation engine. The result provides users with the stories that matter to them most.

"Instead of showing users the most popular stories by number of votes, Feedery uses an algorithm based on their past preferences to deliver stories that best reflect their interests. Hopefully, that means you're not staring at LOLCATS all day long, unless, of course, that's what you want," said Garrett Woodworth, Director of Product for Geeknet.  "Just think about getting the news you want without sifting through hundreds of headlines and being forced into groupthink."

In addition to providing news via a powerful recommendation engine, Feedery has a simple threaded comment system so users can write in their own thoughts.

The algorithm used in Feedery is inspired by the concept of "Single Value Decomposition." This concept was the driver behind the winning entry in the NetFlix challenge. While the algorithm is not an implementation of "SVD" per se, the resulting data model was inspired by it. The goal of Feedery is to recreate SVD in a lightweight, dynamic manner to allow it to respond to the diverse nature of the information contained in RSS feeds.

Feedery is available at feedery.com.
