Integral Systems Introduces Ultra-Compact and Efficient 100 Watt Ku-Band Solid State Power Amplifier

Compact Size, Low Weight, Power Efficiency Gains and Price Point Make Integral Systems' New Line of SSPAs the Right Choice for Customers Looking to Replace Outdated and Expensive TWTAs

CHANTILLY, Va. and COLUMBIA, Md., Jan. 18, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Integral Systems, Inc., (Nasdaq:ISYS) announced today the availability of its ultra-compact and efficient 100 Watt Ku-band Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA). The new 100 Watt SSPA, offered through Integral Systems' SATCOM Solutions division, is a major leap forward in terms of size, weight, power efficiency and cost. The unit's unprecedented high-power efficiency produces large power output – 480 Watt consumption at 120 Watt radio frequency output – from a very small package, while producing very little heat. At just 10 pounds in component form or 15 pounds with the optional cooling system, Integral Systems' 100 Watt SSPA is the smallest, lightest and most efficient power amplifier on the market.

The compact size, low weight, high efficiency and low cost of Integral Systems' ultra-compact and efficient 100 Watt SSPA is the ideal choice for customers requiring a highly efficient amplifier solution or those looking to replace or retrofit Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs) nearing the end of operating life. Conversion to SSPA from TWTA is made simple by Integral Systems' drop-in replacement program with the added benefits of higher reliability, increased efficiency, ultra-compact size, lower weight and reduced heat when compared to a typical TWTA. Integral Systems' 100 Watt SSPA reduces initial capital costs – up to 40 percent depending on system requirements – as well as ongoing operating costs by eliminating expensive tube replacements.

"Our customers have been demanding a smaller, lighter and more powerful amplifier that can solve their most challenging power issues and be used in a disparate set of environments," said Steve Gizinski, General Manager of Integral Systems' SATCOM Solutions division. "Today, we are making available the most advanced, ultra-compact, lightweight and powerful SSPA that is ideal for any customer looking to cut capital and ongoing operating costs and increase efficiencies. In addition, our new line of SSPAs are ideally suited to replace old, 20th Century TWTA technology, with the market's most advanced, state of the art SSPAs."

Integral Systems' new 100 Watt Ku-band SSPA features include:

  • High Power, Ultra-compact – Remarkably small size at 10.7"(L) x 5.3"(W) x 3.65"(H) and 10 pounds (component configuration with power supply) or 10.7"(L) x 5.3"(W) x 6.4"(H) and 15 pounds (outdoor configuration) provides up to ~140 Watts of power.
  • Increased Efficiency – Peak efficiency of 28 percent delivering up to ~140 Watts saturated output power with ~500 Watts of total power consumption producing very little heat, eliminating heat build up issues and minimizing gain and linear power variations.
  • Integrated Power Supply – Optional Integrated DC/DC power supply which accepts a wide range of input voltages from 18 to 55 VDC; co-located with the power amplifier section to eliminate losses in high-current power paths and reduce drain bias line inductance.
  • Simplified Heat Dissipation and Management – Thermal dissipation is typically under 400 Watts making the cooling system smaller and simpler than other power dissipation systems; an integrated heat pipe baseplate evenly distributes heat load to eliminate hotspots.
  • Environmental Sealing – Unlike many component-style (indoor) amplifiers, the core unit is fully O-ring sealed, providing a higher level of reliability and immunity to moisture and dust; the unit has been field tested for all-weather operations.
  • Monitor and Control Functionality – Efficiently monitor and control voltage, current, output power, temperature and component alarms through a simple Graphical User Interface (GUI) that interfaces with a host computer over a serial communications link.

Integral Systems leads the way in developing ultra-compact and efficient SSPAs. The entire line of Integral Systems' family of 25, 40 and 100 Watt SSPAs represent breakthroughs in size, weight, power and cost.
