WASHINGTON, March 7, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Some of the nation's most prolific journalists will serve as Special Guests during the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' 22nd Annual Scholarship Benefit: "An Evening With..." on April 1st in New York City.

Geraldo Rivera, Host, Fox News Channel's, "Geraldo at Large"; Jim Avila, Senior Law and Justice Correspondent, ABC News; Jane Velez-Mitchell, Host, CNN's "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell"; Miguel Almaguer,Correspondent, NBC News; and Marysol Castro, Weather Anchor, CBS' "The Early Show" will be joined by 250-plus journalists, media executives, students, and members of the Latino business, arts and grassroots communities, at NAHJ's premiere fundraising event on Friday, April 1st at Time Warner's Park Cafe.
The annual event benefits the Ruben Salazar Scholarship Fund and Educational Programs, which offers financial aid annually to about 20 aspiring journalists and helps bolster NAHJ's training programs for more than 50 other students at its annual convention, scheduled this June 15-18th in Orlando, Florida.
"Helping hundreds of young people become journalists is one of our core accomplishments we are very proud of," said NAHJ Executive Director Ivan Roman. "We thank all the individuals, companies and foundations, whose support make it possible for more Latino journalists to have a louder voice when producing news and pushing for fair coverage of our community."
To date, NAHJ has awarded more than $1.6 million in scholarships to 620 promising students pursuing careers in journalism. The fund is named after Mexican-American journalism pioneer Ruben Salazar, killed in 1970 by a tear-gas projectile fired by a deputy sheriff while he was interviewing people who had just attended a Chicano Anti-Vietnam War Moratorium rally in East Los Angeles.
A columnist for the Los Angeles Times and news director for the Spanish-language TV station KMEX, Salazar was the first Mexican-American journalist to have a major voice in mainstream news media. For journalists of color, Salazar is a symbol of the need to push for diversity in the mainstream media and accurate coverage of Latino issues. In 2008, Salazar was honored by the U.S. Postal Service's "American Journalists" series with a commemorative stamp.
This year's benefit will be held at Time Warner's Park Café, One Time Warner Center, 10th Floor (58th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues) from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
