The Hudson River Park Trust has installed Seesmart street lights throughout its parking lot, resulting in huge energy savings, a significant carbon footprint reduction, and clean, clear light. In March, the Trust replaced its metal halide lights and ballasts with Seesmart LED cobra head street lights. The result is that Hudson River Park reduced the energy demand of its parking lot lighting by 50%. Since the long-lived Seesmart street lights are rated for up to 50,000 hours and backed by a 5-year warranty, the Trust will also save on maintenance costs associated with replacing lights. Steve Bell, Chief Facility Engineer for Hudson River Park, notes, 'We were looking to brighten up the area by replacing the 400 Watt metal halides with 1,000 Watt metal halides; these street lights did the trick using only 225 Watts. We are testing various Seesmart LEDs throughout the park and we really look forward to seeing what we can save in other areas.' In addition to energy savings, the lighting retrofit will also improve the environmental impact of park operations. Each individual LED street light produces a CO2 emissions reduction of 1,000 lbs per year. The LEDs also minimize light pollution by directing the vast majority of the light produced toward the ground. 'We are delighted with the result of the Hudson River Park Trust retrofit.
