Northrop Grumman Announces Winners of 2011 NextGen Engineers Scholarships

Students to be Mentored by Top Engineers in Company for Three Years

BETHPAGE, N.Y., June 10, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has selected five east coast students to receive the 2011 NextGen Engineers Scholarships, a competition sponsored by the company's Battle Management and Engagement Systems Division. The winners were selected from among 80 applicants.

This year's winners are:

  • Daniel Bach of Syosset High School, Syosset, N.Y.
  • Laura D'Aquila of Cold Spring Harbor High School, Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.
  • Matthew Gus of Lynbrook High School, Hewlett, N.Y.
  • Karl Krehbiel of West Shore High School, Satellite Beach, Fla.
  • Arthur Phidd of Baldwin High School, Baldwin, N.Y.

"We're honored to award five scholarships and internships to these deserving and highly talented students," said Pat McMahon, sector vice president and general manager, Battle Management and Engagement Systems division. "Our winners join a distinguished group of 25 past recipients—many who have gone on to join our company after graduation from college."

"Since we began this expanded program, some of our student scholars have earned patent awards, presented papers before professional conferences and contributed greatly to some of our advanced and most creative projects. I look forward to the great things to come from the class of 2011."

This is the sixth year for the NextGen Engineers competition. This year the scholarship was open to qualifying students who lived in Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York, Brevard County, Fla., and Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties in Maryland – areas in which the company's Aerospace Systems sector has major facilities – and children of employees in the division.

Each of the scholarship winners will receive $10,000 towards their four-year college education – $2,500 per year over four years. In addition, Northrop Grumman works to place each student in internships at the local facility for the three summers of the four-years of undergraduate studies. Including salaries, these scholarships could be worth as much as $30,000 each.

During the internship, each winner will have the chance to work on real-world research and development projects as members of Northrop Grumman engineering teams. On the job, they will be mentored by accomplished senior engineers while bringing their own, fresh approaches to the projects.

Over the course of the past few months, six evaluation teams comprising 22 employees reviewed the applications. Applicants were evaluated on their scholastic records, community service, letters of recommendation and their interest in the engineering profession. The evaluators selected 10 finalists and division executives interviewed the finalists and selected the five final winners.

"Having the opportunity to be mentored by some of the best engineers in the world is a priceless experience for these students," McMahon added. "Our program brings together people of many ages with an incredibility diverse set of ideas and thoughts to create an incredibly rich experience for all."

An awards program and dinner will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the headquarters of the Battle Management and Engagement Systems' Division in Bethpage, N.Y., and at the division's offices in Melbourne, Fla.
