Entropic Communications, Zoran Bring the Next Generation of IP-Based Set-Top Boxes to Market

Service Providers and Original Equipment Manufacturers Gain a Viable MoCA 2.0 IP Set-Top Box Solution, Putting Them on the Leading Edge of Connected Home Entertainment Technology

CHICAGO, June 15, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Cable Show, Booth #563 -- Entropic Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:ENTR), a leading provider of silicon and software solutions to enable connected home entertainment, and Zoran Corporation (Nasdaq:ZRAN), a global leader in semiconductors for consumer electronics, today announced their collaboration to speed the development of cost-effective MoCA® (Multimedia over Coax) 2.0-enabled IP-based set-top-boxes (STBs). This alliance enables service providers and their original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to harness the power of MoCA 2.0 – the fastest performing, most reliable home networking standard for whole-home distribution of high-definition (HD) multimedia content.

As service providers move to IP gateway/client architectures in the home, MoCA 2.0 will become the standard requirement in next-generation STBs as future bandwidth-intensive services and applications will require a high throughput, 'no excuses' backbone network that only MoCA 2.0 can support.

The Zoran/Entropic reference design leverages the highly-integrated and optimally-suited Zoran SupraXD® 288 processor with Entropic's complete MoCA 2.0 silicon and software solution to enable a new generation of client products with enhanced flexibility, high speed performance and backward interoperability to existing MoCA 1.1 networks—all at the lowest possible system cost.

"We are continually pushing the boundaries in the set-top-box market, and our partnership with Entropic offers breakthrough products that will create the most dependable whole-home distribution network using the existing coaxial cable infrastructure," said Ram Ofir, senior vice president of Home Entertainment Division at Zoran. "By working with Entropic on next generation MoCA 2.0 IP set-top-boxes, we can offer performance-leading solutions that will serve the operators' needs of today as well as future applications."

Advantages of a MoCA 2.0 IP media gateway include an extremely reliable, high throughput connection that is fully backwards interoperable with previous MoCA 1.x investments; allowing for the seamless deployment of new operator services, from multi-room DVR and backbone Wi-Fi extension to whole-home personal content sharing and immediate access to online applications from any TV in the home, with zero hiccups.

"Our cooperation with Zoran allows us to bring to life the service provider vision of the gateway/client architecture," said Vinay Gokhale, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development at Entropic Communications. "Our MoCA 2.0 reference platform changes the service provider paradigm, allowing them to offer new revenue-generating services and applications that ultimately take advantage of the speed, capacity and affordability delivered by a MoCA 2.0-based IP client set-top-box."

In addition to its collaboration with Zoran, Entropic has developed an active MoCA 2.0 ecosystem, delivering innovative solutions that enable Pay-TV service providers to optimize subscriber value. Entropic will be highlighting many of these solutions at The Cable Show 2011, booth #563, June 14-16, at McCormick Place in Chicago.
