Syrian American Organization Applauds US and UN Actions Against Assad

OAKBROOK, Ill., Aug. 23, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Arab Spring for Syria (ASFS) applauds President Obama's call for Assad's resignation and the impending UN investigation into the Assad regime for crimes against humanity

This Thursday, President Obama joined five European nations in calling for Bashar al-Assad's resignation.

Concurrently, the White House announced an increase in sanctions against the Syrian petrol industry and a ban on American business with Syria.

Also on Thursday, in conjunction with the release of a 22-page report on human rights abuses in Syria, UN High Commissioner of Human Rights Navi Pillay recommended that the Assad regime be considered for investigation by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

The ASFS applauds Thursday's heightened international attention to and diplomatic action against Assad. The ASFS also strongly endorses President Obama's call on Assad to step down, the escalation of US economic sanctions against the Syrian Regime, and Pillay's recommendation to investigate the Assad regime for crimes against humanity.

Like President Obama, the ASFS believes the fall of the Assad regime is evident. The organization strongly endorses the President's statement that Bashar's "...calls for dialogue and reform have rung hollow while he is imprisoning, torturing and slaughtering his own people. We have consistently said that President Assad must lead a democratic transition or get out of the way. He has not led. For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside." Taking inspiration from the Libyan, Tunisian, and Egyptian populace's accomplishments, the ASFS believes it is only a matter of time before the Syrian people obtain popular sovereignty.

The ASFS further applauds the US and UN's timely recognition of the severe brutality used by the Assad regime against the Syrian public and support of the Syrian people; and thanks Dick Durbin and Nick Cohen, as well as other government officials and journalists who have been instrumental in advocating for international action against Assad. This support is required for the attainment of popular sovereignty and universal human rights in Syria.

Arab Spring for America, based in Oakbrook, IL, uses democratic principles to support the interests of Syrian Americans and Syrians through education, outreach, grass-roots community-building, and advocacy while also providing humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees.
