DETROIT, Aug. 29, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq:CPWR), the technology performance company, will officially open its Lafayette Greens urban garden Wednesday, August 31, with music, vegetables, VIPs, speeches and tours.
Lafayette Greens is the organic space that has blossomed this summer on the vacant lot at W. Lafayette and Shelby. Sponsored by Compuware, the garden provides a relaxing green space amid downtown Detroit's cars and concrete, and serves as a center for anyone who wants to learn about organic gardening in an urban setting. Produce from Lafayette Greens benefits Gleaners, the Detroit-based food bank.
The Aug. 31 event begins at 11:30 a.m. with music by the Detroit folk group Lac La Belle and continues at noon with a 30-minute welcome ceremony that will include brief remarks by Compuware Executive Chairman -- and master gardener -- Peter Karmanos Jr., Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and other guests. There will also be a seed-planting photo-op with Karmanos and other VIPs.
From 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lafayette Greens staff will be available for interviews and tours.
Lafayette Greens is filled with collards, lettuce, zucchini, eggplant, beans and other vegetables, plus apples, peaches, plums, cosmos, sunflowers and lavender. It also features one of Detroit's only bioswales, a modern landscape feature that recycles drainage water.
