At the time of the 200th anniversary of its founder, Carlsberg announces five international teams shortlisted to transform historic brewhouse into exciting new Carlsberg Experience Centre

In April 2011, at the time of the global launch of the Carlsberg brand, Carlsberg launched an International Design Competition to transform its historic Copenhagen Brewhouse into a must-see Brand and Experience Centre, capable of attracting 500.000 visitors annually.

Amidst fierce competition, the following have been selected to go through to the final selection round:

Wilkinson Eyre Architects (UK), Ralph Applebaum Associates (UK), Imagination (UK), BIG (DK) and DAY (NL).

Commenting on this announcement, Sue Siddall, Managing Director of IDEO and an external member of the Carlsberg selection panel, said:

"Having hosted an information meeting in Denmark in May, attended by more than 100 representatives from local and international companies, over 240 companies registered interest. We received 64 entries from 20 countries and were very impressed with both the creativity and vision of the submissions.

"We have now narrowed this down to five teams who will unfold their visions over the coming months. We are looking forward to select a winner in March 2012 who will guide us in creating a visionary building which will become one of Copenhagen's leading attractions."

This announcement comes at the same time as the 200th anniversary of Carlsberg's founder, J.C. Jacobsen, on 2nd September 2011. During September, Carlsberg will be celebrating his commitment and thirst for perfection and illustrating how he still inspires the company *to step up and do the right thing', be it in the way Carlsberg runs its business and makes its products or the way in which it makes a positive contribution to society.

“Ideas ferment at Carlsberg - they bubble to the surface and inspire society, scientists, visitors and citizens, in the same way J.C. Jacobsen still inspires the company,” comments Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen, Carlsberg's CEO, as he announces an impressive list of events taking place during 2011 to celebrate the founder's birthday.

At the age of 24, J.C. Jacobsen ran his own brewery and, with an explorative mindset and a firm belief in science, he established Carlsberg in 1847 and created and secured the foundations of what is today the fourth largest brewer in the world.

"We are organising events that will pay a fitting tribute to J.C. Jacobsen and his relentless efforts to create the perfect beer. The events have been developed so as to appeal to many people with many different interests from many walks of life" adds Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen.

A series of activities are planned for September, including historic tours of "Carlsberg's Copenhagen", including visits to the world-famous Little Mermaid and the Glyptotek Museum, along with beer and food tasting demonstrations. On 3rd September, Carlsberg is hosting the public Carlsberg Festival at which several of Denmark's leading musicians will be taking to the stage.

Later in the month, on the 14-15th September, the Carlsberg Foundation will host a Scientific Symposium, entitled "J.C. Jacobsen 200 years: From Science to Business and Society" which will be attended by some of the world's leading scientists. The Carlsberg Foundation will also award two special Research Prizes of DKK 1 million and provide unique housing facilities for international scientists in the beautiful Carlsberg villas.

A special anniversary logo (see above) has been created for the celebrations. The logo celebrates and reflects the pioneering spirit, the beer and the unbroken 200 years long chain of inspiration from J.C. Jacobsen.
