BALTIMORE, Sept. 6, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Electronic Systems sector has received the 2011 Outstanding Corporate Leadership Award from the Maryland Recycling Network for its success at recycling and waste reduction efforts during the past year.

The award is one of eight given by the Maryland Recycling Network, which works to promote sustainable reduction, reuse and recycling – the "three R's" – of materials otherwise destined for disposal, and to promote and increase the purchase of products made with recycled material content.

"We believe strongly in minimizing our contributions to waste disposal," said Kip Keenan, director of environmental, health, safety and fire protection at Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector. "By extending our recycling program to all of our employees in Maryland, we are having a significant impact on making the state a greener place to work."

In early 2009, Northrop Grumman's Baltimore area operations began using single-stream recycling, which allows paper, cans, plastics, glass and cardboard to be collected together in one container. This made it simpler for employees to decide to recycle, thereby increasing their involvement in the program. An employee engagement campaign called the "50/50 Recycling Challenge" was then introduced at its Baltimore, Annapolis, Sykesville and Elkridge, Md., campuses, which further encouraged employees to recycle.

Recycling is both cost-efficient and energy-saving. Each ton of mixed paper that is recycled saves the energy equivalent of 185 gallons of gasoline. Recycling one ton of aluminum cans conserves the equivalent of 1,665 gallons of gasoline, according to the website http://recyclingfacts.org. ;

Northrop Grumman began its first recycling program at its Baltimore campus in 1991. The company now conducts similar single-stream recycling efforts at various campuses including Apopka, Fla., Charlottesville, Va., Sunnyvale, Calif., Woodland Hills, Calif., Rolling Meadows, Ill., and Salt Lake City, Utah.
