Superconductor Technologies Inc. to Present at the 2011 EUCAS Superconductivity Centennial Conference on September 20th

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Sept. 14, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Superconductor Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:SCON) ("STI"), a world leader in the development and production of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials and associated technologies, is scheduled to present at the 2011 EUCAS-ISEC-ICMC Superconductivity Centennial Conference being held at the World Forum Conference Centre in The Hague, The Netherlands. Brian Moeckly, STI's Director of Materials Research & Development, will present on Tuesday, September 20th at 12:45 CET.

Dr. Moeckly will participate in the session "Wires & Tapes: Long length Coated Conductors (CC)." The paper, which is titled "Fabrication and Performance of HTS Films on Simplified Templates for Low-Cost Coated Conductors," will report on the properties of HTS films deposited onto simplified templates using the technique of reactive coevaporation with cyclic deposition and reaction (RCE-CDR).

RCE-CDR is a low-cost, high-yield, scalable process for deposition of HTS films with the advantage that the composition of the films is precisely varied and reproducibly controlled. The result is that high-quality HTS films can be deposited onto simplified, cost-reduced coated conductor templates. At present STI is working to optimize each component of the multi-layer process required to produce high-performance 2G HTS wire. STI has fabricated samples on simplified IBAD templates produced by Los Alamos National Laboratory that support a critical current density of greater than 250 A/cm-width in a 3-T magnetic field at a temperature of 65 K. This performance was achieved without the introduction of artificial pinning centers in the films. Such high performance allows the manufacture of low-cost 2G HTS wire and enables demanding applications such as high-power wind generators.

About EUCAS

EUCAS is one of the leading international conferences dedicated to new developments in superconductivity, superconductors, and their applications. Every two years researchers and engineers in this field meet in Europe to present and discuss new ideas and developments in applied superconductivity. The conference will address continuing improvements in low temperature superconducting materials and applications as well as emerging applications of high temperature superconductors and exciting developments of new superconducting materials. The conference topics include materials and basic properties, wires and tapes, and superconducting electronics as well as large scale applications in energy technics.
