Video Release -- U.S. Drops Below Canada in Economic Freedom Ranking for the First Time

New Video Illustrates the Impact of America's Declining Economic Freedom

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 13, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In response to findings from the latest Economic Freedom of the World Report revealing that the United States has fallen further in its economic freedom ranking, the Charles Koch Institute has released a new, online video, Economic Freedom in America Today, to educate viewers about the serious consequences of this trend on our quality of life.

The video illustrates how excessive government spending and regulations are eroding economic freedom in the United States, hampering the growth of the economy and leading to record-breaking unemployment. To make this relationship more tangible to viewers, the video translates current statistics into concrete effects that have a direct impact on viewers' lives. For example, the video notes the fact that it costs US businesses $1.75 trillion to comply with government regulations and that this money would be enough to hire 43 million workers — more than one-quarter of the US work force.

The video is the latest in a series from the Economic Freedom Project, which launched in June 2011 to improve understanding of the positive impacts economic freedom has on quality of life. The first video in the series, Economic Freedom & Quality of Life, gained more than 400,000 views.

Economic freedom is the overwhelming catalyst in creating jobs, fighting poverty, building a safe environment to raise a family, and improving overall human well-being. The project's website, www.EconomicFreedom.org, and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/economicfreedom host information, research, a blog and informative videos to empower visitors with a better understanding of the relationship between economic freedom and well-being.
