About World Design Capital Helsinki 2012:

Every second year one city is chosen as World Design Capital – a city that uses design from a social, cultural and economic perspective to reinvent the city. In 2012, Helsinki will be the World Design Capital, with the theme "Open Helsinki – Embedding Design in Life." Helsinki's co-hosts are the cities of Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa and Lahti.

The World Design Capital is an initiative of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid). Icsid is a non-profit organisation that protects and promotes the interests of the profession of industrial design. Helsinki is the third city to receive the title, after Turin in Italy (2008) and Seoul in South Korea (2010).

The World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 program consists of events, programs, public initiatives, creative partnerships, and projects that examine design as a tool for cultural, social, and economic development, while also drawing attention to the ways in which design is embedded in our everyday lives.

Both the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the Ministry of Employment and the Economy are strongly involved, among them Aalto University, the University of Helsinki and the Institute of Design at Lahti University of Applied Sciences. The corporate partners are Blue1, BMW, Fortum, Helsinki Airport, HOK-Elanto, KONE, Martela, MTV MEDIA, Nokia, Sanoma Magazines Finland, UPM and Viking Line as well as Clear Channel, Deloitte, Fjord, hasan&partners, IBM, Iittala, Lapin Kulta, Paulig, and STOCKMANN.
