PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 13, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Three local digital artists have each received $1,000 for their "Best In Show" works as part of the PECO and Breadboard Art in the Air program.

Art in the Air is a digital art initiative developed through a partnership between PECO and Breadboard, a program of the University City Science Center that explores the intersection of art, science and technology, to showcase the works of local digital artists. From September through December 2011, three new artists' works were featured each Friday on the PECO famed Crown Lights at 2301 Market Street in Philadelphia. The "Best In Show" winners were selected from the group of 12 artists whose works were exhibited in 2011.

The winning works of art will be showcased throughout February and March, on Friday evenings from 5 p.m. to Midnight on the PECO Crown Lights.

"We are delighted to provide a digital canvas to showcase the many extraordinary pieces of art created by our local talented artists," said Jeff Gordon, manager of Corporate Relations. "Special congratulations to our best in show winners for their imaginative works."

"The Crown Lights provide a unique and inspiring canvas for a diverse group of artists," said Dan Schimmel, Breadboard director. "From students at Drexel and University of the Arts to a professional video editor, these artists and their works exemplify the range of creativity found in the Greater Philadelphia region."

Artists interested in submitting their work for consideration should click here or submit their work to artintheair@sciencecenter.org.  More information about the PECO Crown Lights is available at www.peco.com/crownlights.

About the Best in Show Winners:

"Dancers" – Created by James Simpson: Simpson is currently a student in the Multimedia department at University of the Arts.  He began playing with video and image editing software at the age of 13 and has been obsessed with its possibilities since.  The main influence in his body of work comes from both the animation and design worlds.

"The Green and Growing City" - Created by Timothy Winger:  This work was created specifically for the PECO Crown Lights as an animation reflecting both the life and energy of the city as well as Philadelphia's leading role in making urban areas "green" and artistically integrated into their natural surroundings. This 30-second animation of nature's growth and life cycles seen on top of one of the city's prominent structures represents what William Penn's idea of a "green country town" is all about.

"Color Philadelphia" – Created Peter Eyrich:  A senior at Drexel University, Eyrich is studying Graphic Design in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. His passion for design stems from an early appreciation of the arts that he gained from growing up in Philadelphia; a city rich in both its art and history. His motion project "Color Philadelphia" celebrates the joy of simple art, with a nod to some of the more iconic elements of Philadelphia, and city life in general.
