Cosmopolitan Exceeds 100,000 Paid Digital Subscribers

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Mar 7, 2012) - Cosmopolitan, the No. 1 selling monthly magazine on newsstands, today announced it is the first Hearst Magazines brand to surpass 100,000 paid individual subscribers for its digital edition, which is available on Apple, Zinio, Barnes & Noble and Amazon Kindle newsstands. Cosmopolitan was an early adopter of offering digital editions to consumers on all tablets and e-readers, selling initially on the Zinio platform as early as 2005.

"Reaching this substantial milestone is one more illustration of the power of the Cosmopolitan brand," said Kate White, editor-in-chief. "We answered the call from our readers who wanted access to the magazine's fresh, fun and engaging content wherever they are."

As the tablet and e-reader market continues to expand, Cosmopolitan expects its digital subscription business to steadily increase.

"We always have been bullish about the viability of digital magazines, and Cosmopolitan's success in this space underscores the power of this channel," said Chris Wilkes, vice president, Hearst App Lab. "There is a significant amount of potential for this paid-to-consumer, digital business as the device footprint continues its explosive growth."

Hearst Magazines has sold more than 500,000 digital subscriptions across its portfolio to date and expects to reach 1 million by the end of 2012. Added David Carey, president, Hearst Magazines: "As the tablet and digital space offer magazine brands additional opportunities for both content and revenue, we anticipate that our businesses will change and grow in new ways as we're already witnessing with Cosmo. In addition to its success with digital subscriptions, we've also been able to launch brand extensions like CFG: Cosmo for Guys on the iPad, which enables us to test new concepts without a significant capital investment. We hope to do more of that in the future."
