USAID Awards Thermal Remediation Design Contract to TerraTherm for Dioxin Cleanup at Da Nang Airport, Vietnam

FITCHBURG, MA--(Marketwire - Mar 20, 2012) - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded TerraTherm, Inc. a thermal remediation design contract for cleanup of dioxin-contaminated soil and sediment at the Da Nang Airport in Vietnam. The design is expected to be completed in August 2012. Working in close coordination with the Government of Vietnam (GVN), USAID will present the preliminary designs to the GVN in May and July, so that the GVN can consider the technology as part of final project approvals.

The Da Nang Airport is one of the major dioxin hotspots remaining from the storage and handling of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Ultimately, the cleanup at Da Nang will better protect the health of the nearly 800,000 nearby residents and facilitate the implementation of airport expansion plans.

USAID has proposed the use of the In-Pile Thermal Desorption® (IPTD®) technology for treatment of approximately 95,000 cubic yards of soil and sediment at the Da Nang Airport. The IPTD approach would incorporate an above-ground, covered and fully insulated treatment pile structure to be filled with soil and then heated to destroy the dioxin. Once approved and implemented, the technology can safely and effectively treat the soil to the required Vietnamese cleanup levels, as has been demonstrated at similarly-sized projects in the United States.
