The National Law Journal Unveils Inaugural NLJ 350, Ranking New Crop of Midsized Law Firms in U.S.

NEW YORK, April 16, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ALM's The National Law Journal today published its first-ever NLJ 350 list, a ranking of the 350 largest law firms in the U.S. that includes an additional 100 midsized firms from coast to coast.

Last month, The National Law Journal published the 2012 NLJ 250, its annual list of the nation's 250 largest law firms. The 100 additional firms ranked in the 2012 NLJ 350 are geographically diverse, coming from 59 different cities. Chicago is home to the most firms in this group (eight), followed by New York (six), Los Angeles and Cleveland (five each).

"Since 1978, with our first list of 200 firms, and 1983, when the list expanded to 250, the NLJ survey has identified the largest legal players in the United States – ranking them by headcount and providing detail about their locations, partners, associates and other attorneys," explained David L. Brown, editor in chief of The National Law Journal. "This year, our expanded list includes 100 additional firms, ranked from No. 251 to No. 350. This expansion allowed us to take a closer look at the growing 'midsized' law firm market, which includes a number of regional players in markets outside the big cities that dominate the NLJ 250."

The NLJ 350 appears in the April 16th issue of the newspaper and is also available online now at www.nlj.com/nlj250.

Other interesting facts regarding the NLJ 350 list include:

  • Average headcount among the newly ranked firms is 133 (compared to 505 for the firms in the 2012 NLJ 250).
  • A total of 13,259 lawyers work at those 100 additional firms.
  • The largest firm on the list, ranked at 251, is Philadelphia's Post & Schell, with 160 lawyers; Freeborn & Peters in Chicago is ranked at 350 with 112 lawyers.
  • The geographic diversity of the newly ranked firms ranges from 124-lawyer Crowley Fleck in Billings, Mont. to the 113-lawyer McNair firm in Columbia, S.C.

According to Brown, the inaugural issue of the NLJ 350 includes several firm profiles and snapshot news items for every new firm on the list.
