ALEXANDRIA, Va.., April 25, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Members of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), also known as the 'best-kept secret in medication management for the elderly' will gather in Anaheim, California from May 21-23, 2012, for their Spring Conference + Exhibition at the Anaheim Marriott. ASCP members will participate in educational programs and discuss current issues affecting the appropriate use of medication and the promotion of healthy aging. Members also will discuss a rule by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to require consultant pharmacists to be independent from long-term care pharmacies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and wholesalers.

What is a consultant pharmacist and what role do these health care professionals play in health care for older persons? Consultant pharmacists are the patient-centered advocates for seniors at-risk for medication-related problems. Seniors typically take an average of six medications, opening the way for drug interactions. Working in long-term care and assisted living facilities as well as with older adults in the community, these ASCP members possess specific knowledge and skills in geriatric pharmacotherapy and are experts in the unique medication-related needs of seniors and long-term care residents.

ASCP is an association representing more than 6,000 members who manage drug therapy and improve the quality of life of geriatric patients and other individuals residing in a variety of environments, including nursing facilities, sub acute care and assisted living facilities, psychiatric hospitals, hospice programs, and home and community-based care.
