SRI Surgical Supports New Life Cycle Analysis Study

"A Comparison of Reusable and Disposable Perioperative Textiles: Sustainability State-of-the-Art 2012"

TAMPA, Fla., May 10, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SRI/Surgical Express, Inc. (Nasdaq:STRC), a leading provider of reusable surgical products and reprocessing services within the healthcare industry, continues its commitment to environmental sustainability through the support of a recently published life cycle analysis of surgical textiles. The study incorporated current textile technology (reusable and disposable) and industry standards utilized to test these textiles for liquid and viral protection based on anticipated exposure.

An excerpt from the article abstract summarizes the study's primary findings:

"Contemporary comparisons of reusable and single-use perioperative textiles (surgical gowns and drapes) reflect major changes in the technologies to produce and reuse these products. Reusable and disposable gowns and drapes meet new standards for medical workers and patient protection, use synthetic lightweight fabrics, and are competitively priced. In multiple science based life cycle environmental studies, reusable surgical gowns and drapes demonstrate substantial sustainability benefits over the same disposable product in natural resource energy (200%-300%),  water (250%-330%),  carbon footprint (200%-300%),  volatile organics, solid wastes(750%), and instrument recovery. Because all other factors (cost, protection, and comfort) are reasonably similar, the environmental benefits of reusable surgical gowns and drapes to health care sustainability programs are important for this industry..." This study, published in the May 2012 edition of Anesthesia & Analgesia was authored by Michael Overcash, PhD, who designed and conducted the study, analyzed the data, and wrote the manuscript. SRI Surgical is one of several industry manufacturers that collaborated with Dr. Overcash in support of the study's analysis.
