Granite Hill Estates to Welcome Sketch Artist and Painter, Betty Henderson

Artist to Appear on May 24, Exhibit Through June

HALLOWELL, ME--(Marketwire - May 15, 2012) - Granite Hill Estates (GHE), the Kennebec Valley's premiere continuing care retirement community, welcomes Hallowell-based sketch artist and painter, Betty Henderson, as part of its ongoing Art for Life series. Betty's work is exhibited in the lobby of the Maine Lodge, and she will appear in a Meet the Artist session on Thursday, May 24, at 4:00 p.m.

Betty began sketching as soon as she could hold a pencil. After getting no art instruction in elementary or high school, she signed up for all the art classes available at the University of Maine at Farmington, graduating with a degree in elementary education. When her pupils didn't understand something, she put her sketching ability to work to explain what she wanted them to know. After marrying, she moved to Schoharie, New York, where she took lessons in oil painting. Years later she enjoyed lessons with an art teacher in Florida who encouraged her and helped her grow. "Time flies when you are painting, and I love it," says Betty.

"Betty's two daughters inherited her artistic inclinations," said Kathy Jorgensen, Granite Hill's executive director, "though one is an accountant, while the other continues to paint. Since moving to Granite Hill, Betty's been a regular at our Thursday Artist in Residence sessions. She still has much of the work she's painted or drawn. We're fortunate to be able to share her collection for these next two months."

To get to Granite Hill Estates, take exit 109 from the south or 109B from the north off I-95 (Winthrop). Head west on Route 202. Take a left onto Edison Drive. GHE is on the right.
