Sugarmade Collaborates With MIT Sloan School of Management to Develop Process to Conduct Nation's First Life Cycle Assessment of Tree-Free Paper

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 13, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCBB:SGMD), a marketer and distributor of sustainable tree-free paper products, today announced that it has collaborated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management to help design the process to conduct the nation's first life cycle assessment (LCA) of tree-free paper. LCA measures the footprint of what goes into making a product, from "cradle to grave."

At MIT, the project was led by a graduate student group at the MIT Sloan Laboratory for Sustainable Business, under the guidance of Jason Jay, Ph. D., director of MIT's Initiative for Sustainable Business and Society and a lecturer in sustainability at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Dr. Jay is also conducting research on organizational structures and processes that promote environmentally sustainable business practices. The project was recently completed, and Sugarmade is now incorporating the MIT team's recommendations into the LCA.

"We were very happy to have our students partner with Sugarmade to lay the groundwork for the first LCA on tree-free paper," said Dr. Jay. "It is great to see young firms like Sugarmade innovating toward more sustainable business practices that could benefit people and the planet. Rigorous evaluation like an LCA is an essential step in the process."

"Building the process to perform a life cycle assessment of our environmentally friendly paper products with an institution that is not only prestigious, but one that also has real expertise in this area, is an important part of our sustainability quest," said Scott Lantz, Sugarmade's chief executive officer. "It represents a significant opportunity for Sugarmade to begin to compare the environmental and sustainable benefits of the company's tree-free paper with those of tree-based manufacturers. The findings also will provide insight on the entire paper production process, which, in turn, will help promote the benefits of tree-free paper to consumers."

Sugarmade paper is 100% tree-free and made of bagasse, a residual by-product of sugarcane, and bamboo, both rapidly renewable resources. The paper is acid free and is 100% compostable and recyclable. Sugarmade paper performs on office and home equipment with no issues related to jamming, misfeeding, paper curl, paper dust, or image performance.
