Veterinarian Announces Goleta Pet Care and Dental Services

GOLETA, Calif., June 17, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Airport Animal Hospital announced that the clinic offers pet dental care. During a dental exam, the veterinarian will check a pet's gum line for signs of infection and remove excess plaque from the teeth. Since pets cannot brush or clean their own teeth, regular at-home care, along with an annual cleaning, is essential to preventing periodontal disease. Pet owners are urged to take their pet's oral health seriously. Without proper preventive care, pets are at risk for gingivitis and bacterial infections, which can enter the blood stream and damage the internal organs.

"Many pet owners are surprised to learn that more than 85% of adult pets suffer from periodontal disease," said Dr. Lewis. "This is a preventable condition that can lead to serious gum infections, even putting internal organs at risk. Fortunately, routine dental care, including cleaning dogs' teeth, can help reduce the risk of infection or complications."

Dr. Stephen Lewis recommends annual dental cleanings for pets, along with annual wellness exams and vaccinations. The clinic uses ultrasonic equipment to remove plaque buildup and clean along the gum line. Teeth are then polished and given a fluoride treatment to protect the tooth enamel and prevent decay.

"An annual dental cleaning is an important opportunity to assess the health of a pet," said Dr. William B. Wallace, a veterinarian who practices with Dr. Lewis. "During this visit, we will check for any signs of infection and remove plaque and calculus build-up from an animal's teeth."

Since pets are unable to clean their own teeth, food or other particles can become lodged along the gum line. These particles can irritate the gums and lead to a bacterial infection. If the infection enters the bloodstream, damage to the heart, liver, kidneys and other internal organs may occur.

"Cleaning dogs' teeth is a critically important part of wellness care," said Dr. Wallace. "We truly believe prevention is the best form of treatment, and our goal is to reduce the risk for periodontal disease and gingivitis."

Dr. Wallace and Dr. Lewis also emphasized the importance of at-home dental care, including regularly cleaning dogs' teeth.

"Brushing a dog's teeth once a week is one of the most important steps that can be taken for reducing the risk of gingivitis and other oral health problems," said Dr. Wallace. "Our pet care team is always happy to help explain the best brushing techniques that will make this an easy and enjoy experience for both pet owners and their pets!"

The animal clinic, founded in 1968, has a long tradition of providing pet care to the Goleta community. In addition to dental care, the animal vet clinic offers senior wellness care, vaccinations, spay and neuter operations, boarding, grooming, surgical and emergency care.
