Dr. Alan Daugherty Named Editor of ATVB Journal

DALLAS, July 2, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Heart Association and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health, are pleased to announce the appointment of Alan Daugherty, Ph.D., D.Sc., F.A.H.A. as editor-in-chief of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association (ATVB), a monthly journal devoted to the biology, prevention and impact of vascular diseases.

Daugherty is Senior Associate Dean of Research in the College of Medicine, Director of the Saha Cardiovascular Research Center and Gill Foundation Chair in Preventive Cardiology at University of Kentucky, Lexington.

The July 2012 issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology is the first issue produced by the new editorial team. Daugherty wrote in an introductory editorial, "We are excited to continue to assist in the ascent of a journal that has provided numerous scientific contributions to the areas of science included in its name."

Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology publishes essential peer-reviewed research on vascular biology, atherosclerosis and lipoproteins, and thrombosis. The focus is on new scientific advances that will drive tomorrow's advances in clinical practice. Highlights of the current issue include a study of synaptic proteins involved in embryonic development of the vascular system, new findings on the role of B cells in atherosclerosis, and the latest genetic data on disease associations with lipoprotein(a).

"Our primary focus is on attracting the most important new primary research studies across disciplines," Daugherty said. "We're also committed to presenting fair and balanced reviews of critical issues in the subject areas we cover." The current issue presents an 'ATVB in Focus' review on the mechanisms of cell death in heart disease.

Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology also presents editorials, letters to the editor and other features to keep readers involved in the worldwide dialogue concerning the development, prevention and treatment of arteriosclerosis and thrombosis.

Subscribers can access the full text of each issue at the journal's Web site, atvb.ahajournals.org.  In addition to extensive online features, the recently introduced iPad® edition of ATVB provides readers with a convenient new option for accessing the full content of each issue.

The new editorial team acknowledges the outstanding contributions of the editors who have led the journal since its initiation in 1981—including the outgoing editorial team assembled by Dr. Mark B. Taubman and subsequently led by Dr. Edward A. Fisher.  "All of us involved in cardiovascular research owe an enormous debt of gratitude to these dedicated editors, and it is their example that we seek to build on," Daugherty added.

"Dr. Daugherty brings outstanding scientific expertise and judgment, coupled with proven editorial skills, to this new assignment," commented Martha K. Cathcart, Ph.D., chairperson of the American Heart Association's Scientific Publishing Committee.  "We're confident that his team will continue and consolidate ATVB's role as the most-read and most-valued journal of vascular research."
