Entropic Communications' Set-Top Box System-on-a-Chip Technology Featured in EchoStar's Freeview+ HD Ultra Slim Box

A Complete Entertainment Solution, the Ultra Slim Box Incorporates Entropic's Low Power Silicon Solution That Delivers Added Power Efficiency, Media-Rich Navigation and Online Networked Video Content

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IBC2012, Entropic Meeting Suite G106/107 and EchoStar Stand 1.F76 -- Entropic Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today proudly announced that its technology has been selected as the system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution for EchoStar's recently launched Ultra Slim Box, an advanced, high definition (HD) digital TV recorder combining Freeview+ HD and access to Smart TV entertainment. The device will be on display this week in Amsterdam at IBC2012, in Entropic's RAI meeting suite G106/107 and in EchoStar's stand 1.F76.

The compact, elegant Ultra Slim Box delivers an impressive entertainment experience which enables consumers to watch, record, pause, rewind live TV, access Smart TV services and catch-up on their favorite TV shows – all delivered in a super-slim, low-profile device.

The device uses Entropic's highly-integrated, low-power set-top box SoC silicon, the PNX849x. The two-tuner terrestrial DVR device leverages the compact Entropic SoC design with an ARM® Cortex™-A9 superscalar 1250 DMIPS CPU to deliver the advanced performance required to execute heavyweight applications. Additionally, with an innovative power management system, Entropic's SoC enables complete systems power control enabling the device to power optimize or move to an ultra low-power standby operation.

"The Ultra Slim Box is the complete entertainment solution and puts the consumer in control of their digital entertainment experience," said Rhod Williams, senior vice president and general manager of EchoStar in Europe. "As the slimmest digital TV recorder in the world, we selected Entropic's SoC to reduce the power profile, while ensuring a powerful processing device that would offer media-rich navigation and the ability to access networked video content, applications and advanced media services."

"Having an established relationship with EchoStar we understood their need for a silicon solution that would optimize the TV viewing experience and ensure its twin tuner device would enable consumers to watch one channel while recording another with crystal clear picture quality and graphics," said Mark Samuel, senior vice president and general manager, Set-Top Box Group, Entropic Communications. "Our silicon and software complement the brilliant design of the Ultra Slim Box and ensures that despite its compact form factor, the feature sets are not compromised."

The Ultra Slim Box HDT-610R is available to consumers in the United Kingdom, and offers access to an impressive list of HD and standard definition TV channels, and Internet connectivity to access Smart TV features including catch-up TV and the ability to upgrade to the latest software and features online. The Ultra Slim Box HDT-610R is available from key retailers in the UK.
