Strategic Healthcare Group to Present at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM)


INDIANAPOLIS, IN--(Marketwire - Sep 11, 2012) - Blood management experts from Strategic Healthcare Group (www.bloodmanagement.com), the leading provider of blood management consulting, education and informatics solutions, will deliver oral or poster abstract presentations at the 2012 Annual Meeting for the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM), being held September 20-22 in Pittsburgh.

Carolyn Burns, MD, medical director of transfusion services at Strategic Healthcare Group, will present a poster on "Characterization of Off-Label Use of Recombinant Human Factor VIIa in a Large Non-Academic Tertiary Care Hospital." Dr. Burns is a board certified pathologist (AP/CP). She served as medical director of the Jewish Hospital department of pathology from 1991 to 2011, where she directed the transfusion and tissue services for the hospital system. She also is an assistant clinical professor in the department of pathology at the University of Louisville. She serves as chairman of the medical advisory committee of the American Red Cross, and has been extensively published in peer reviewed journals.

Joseph Thomas, RN, BSN, vice president of program services at Strategic Healthcare Group, will present an oral abstract on "Under-recognition and Underreporting of the Pulmonary Complications to Transfusion." Thomas has clinical experience in both critical care nursing and blood management program development. In 2002 he developed a nationally recognized program built around safer, more evidence-based blood utilization. He served as director of blood management for the Western Region of the Cleveland Clinic Health System until joining Strategic Healthcare Group in 2007. Over the past decade, he has educated and mentored thousands of clinicians on transfusion related topics and worked with more than 100 hospitals throughout the country.

Both abstract presentations will be held September 21, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, Pittsburgh.

Additionally, Tim Hannon, MD, MBA, founder and president of Strategic Healthcare Group, will partner with Kenichi Tanaka, MD, MSc, professor of anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, to present a workshop titled "Tools for Best Practices in Blood Management" on September 21, 2012 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh University Center in the Schenley Ballroom IV-VI, located across the street from the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum.
