Fortum's sustainability efforts recognised globally

Espoo, Finland, 2012-09-14 11:12 CEST (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PRESS RELEASE 14 September 2012

Fortum's work on sustainability has received two important international recognitions. In the global Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) Fortum received a record high scoring 98 out of 100. Inclusion in the index indicates Fortum's strategic focus on climate change mitigation, consideration of its long-term impact on business, good internal data management and comprehensiveness in the company's climate reporting. Carbon Disclosure Project is representing 655 institutional investors with $78 trillion in assets.

Fortum was also listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index DJSI World for the tenth consecutive year. Fortum improved its scores especially in the area of social responsibility.

"Sustainability is at the core of our strategy and I am very delighted that we have been able to contribute to climate change mitigation and well-being of societies. Fortum is a major investor and employer, and we have a significant role in promoting local well-being. I am very pleased that our increasing efforts on social responsibility have been recognized", says Anne Brunila, Fortum's Executive Vice President of Corporate Relations and Strategy.

In addition to supply chain management, Fortum has outperformed in several areas of social responsibility, such as labour practices and stakeholder engagement compared to last year's results in Dow Jones assessment. Health and safety has been Fortum's priority for years and it has also been ranked high. Being a significant purchaser of goods and services Fortum has renewed its practices for supply chain management as well as started supplier audits in 2012.

In environmental responsibility, Fortum improved its result significantly in the environmental management, biodiversity and climate issues.  In August 2012 OAO Fortum's operations in Russia received ISO 14001 certification bringing Fortum’s certification coverage up to 95%. In the economic responsibility Fortum was ranked industry best for its customer relationship management and the economic performance measurement and scorecard system.
