Houston Public Access Channel Enhances Community Services

New Equipment, Training Courses, and Expanded Class Schedules Provide Increased Opportunities

HOUSTON, Oct. 1, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Houston MediaSource, a non-profit organization that provides public access cable television programming to the city of Houston, has launched a capital improvement campaign designed to coincide with the celebration of its 25th anniversary.

"We are awaiting delivery of new cameras for our television studio," says Executive Director Tom Richards, "and over the next several months, we will replace most of the equipment in our control room. This will represent a significant upgrade in terms of the quality of service that we can provide."

HMS gives ordinary citizens access to the mass media by furnishing them with training, equipment, and a cable television channel to bring their ideas to life. Houston MediaSource maintains a multimedia complex containing everything that citizen producers need to make their own television programs: cameras, microphones, lights, and editing computers, plus a fully appointed control room and studio.

"The HMS producers give us a rich tapestry of programming," Richards notes, "one which reflects the diversity and vitality of the Houston Community. Every day, HMS viewers can enjoy shows that focus on a variety of topics: news, politics, culture, religion, arts, music, law, health, business, and science."

Since Richards' arrival one year ago, Houston MediaSource has embarked upon a number of significant initiatives designed to recruit more producers, broaden the diversity of programming which airs on the channel, and increase its relevancy to the community which it serves. A new logo was unveiled recently, along with a new website. Additionally, operating hours have been extended, and the number of training classes offered has nearly doubled. Next month, both print and online advertising campaigns will debut.

Houston MediaSource programming airs on all cable systems serving the Houston area: Comcast 17, TVMax 95, Sudden Link 99, Phonoscope 75, and AT&T U-verse 99. Programming is also available online through the HMS website at www.hmstv.org.  HMS provides content to Comcast's Houston's Voice website at www.houstonsvoice.com and to its video-on-demand component.

"It is an exciting time for Houston MediaSource," Richards says. "As we celebrate 25 years of service to the community, we are also looking ahead, laying a solid foundation for the next 25 years."
