Analogic Showcases the BK Medical Flex Focus 800 With Specialized Intraoperative Transducers at American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress

Revolutionary ART Provides Unique Ultrasound Solution for Robotic-Assisted Surgery

PEABODY, Mass., Oct. 2, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Analogic Corporation (Nasdaq:ALOG), enabling the world's medical imaging and aviation security technology, today announced that it will demonstrate its BK Medical branded Flex Focus™ 800 ultrasound system, an industry leading imaging solution for surgical ultrasound guided procedures, at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) 98th Annual Clinical Congress, Sept. 30–Oct. 4, 2012, in Chicago.

In addition, the company will showcase its Advanced Robotic Ultrasound Technology™ (ART™) system with the market's only curved linear array transducer, the ProART™ transducer. The BK Medical premium performance ultrasound system has demonstrated benefits for surgeons performing robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) procedures. In addition, the company's 3DART™ transducer has the potential to benefit robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) procedures.

"Using the BK Medical ART system for robotic-assisted surgery allows us to tackle more difficult, complex lesions in RAPN that we would not have considered for a minimally invasive approach in the past," said Michael Stifelman, M.D., director, Robotic Surgery, NYU Langone Medical Center, New York City. "This technology raises image quality, color Doppler sensitivity, and ease of use to a new level for our robotic-assisted surgery practice."

The Flex Focus 800 also includes the company's innovative Quantum Technology™, offering image quality advancements including improved contrast resolution, as well as new grayscale maps and new image pre-sets, making it easier and quicker to obtain the highest quality images. In addition, Quantum Technology includes a unique Vector Flow Imaging (VFI) mode*, allowing angle independent visualization of blood flow, and an advanced color Doppler mode, enabling superb spatial resolution. Key benefits also include advanced harmonic imaging when imaging all patient types, even the extremely difficult-to-image patient.

The procedure-driven Flex Focus 800 ultrasound system for general surgery supports a broad range of innovative transducers to address the challenges of demanding intraoperative procedures. The I-Shaped, T-Shaped, and Biplane Intraoperative transducers and four-way articulating Laparoscopic transducer make the system one of the most versatile on the market today. Additionally, the small footprint premium performance ultrasound system is extremely maneuverable and offers up to four hours of plug-free imaging.

"The scientists and engineers at Analogic's Denmark design and innovation center worked closely with world renowned surgeons to create a dedicated ultrasound solution for a wide range of interventional procedures offering superior diagnostic imaging capabilities, which are complemented by the latest technological advancements in ultrasound," said Lars Shaw, vice president, global marketing, Analogic Corporation. "The ART system has been very well received since its initial introduction for robotic-assisted surgery earlier this year, where Analogic's BK Medical branded systems are global leaders."
