Austin After Hours Veterinarian Supports Greyhound Picnic

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 14, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. Scott Johnson, an after-hours veterinarian who runs the Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin, is supporting the Greyhound Pets of America Fall Family Picnic for the Central Texas region. The picnic will take place on November 4, 2012 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at area B of the San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, TX. The emergency vet says that all families and dogs are invited to come and enjoy several activities and training demonstrations, as well as a Halloween costume contest and parade. The Greyhound Pets of America association works to find good homes for greyhounds that can no longer race and educate the community about greyhounds.

Dr. Johnson says he and the other veterinarians and staff at the emergency animal hospital's two locations are always eager to support animal welfare causes. "A lot of people simply aren't aware that there are so many beautiful, healthy greyhound dogs out there that need a home after their racing careers are over. In fact, our Austin animal surgery team has even treated a couple of these greyhounds during emergencies, which is how we were made aware of the GPA and their work to find loving homes for these dogs."

According to the after-hours veterinarian, the picnic will feature activities and demonstrations that the whole family can participate in. There will be a T-Touch training demonstration, as well as an "ask the vet" forum where people can ask a local veterinarian questions they have about their dogs' health. There will also be greyhound contests, and an opportunity for attendees to meet dogs that are currently up for adoption and in need of a family. There will also be a special blessing of the dogs, and a memorial service for dogs that have passed away over the past year. Other activities include a coloring contest for kids, and a Halloween costume contest and parade. Food and beverages will be on sale also. Those who plan to attend should fill out the RSVP form so that organizers can prepare for what they expect to be a big crowd of both dogs and people.

Dr. Johnson says the picnic will be a great opportunity for dogs and families in the area. "We hope that a lot of greyhounds will find their forever families at this event. A few of our team will be at the picnic too, to have a great time and support these beautiful dogs."
