Citi, Propelled by Strong Gains in Emerging Markets, Leaps Into the Top Five Worldwide

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Dec 12, 2012) -  Bank of America Merrill Lynch is Institutional Investor's Top Global Research Firm for a second year running. J.P. Morgan lands in second place, followed by Deutsche Bank in third.

BofA Merrill claims 236 positions in the aggregated results of the magazine's 12 research team surveys this year; that's ten more than it won last year and 22 more than repeat second-teamer J.P. Morgan. Deutsche Bank, with 193 positions, holds steady in third despite increasing its total by more than any other firm, with a gain of 30. Morgan Stanley, whose team-position total rises by 14, to 155, returns at No. 4.

Citi comes close to matching Deutsche's feat: It adds 28 positions, for a total of 129. That's enough to vault the firm from No. 8 to tie for fifth place with UBS, the highest-ranked firm to experience a decline in its team total. Last year the Swiss bank won 135 spots.

When firms are ranked by the number of analysts deemed the best in their respective sectors, J.P. Morgan leads the pack, with 54 first-place finishes, followed by BofA Merrill in second place, with 50. That's a much narrower gap than the one that separated these two last year, when J.P. Morgan claimed 64 top spots to BofA Merrill's 49.

Here too Deutsche lays claim to the biggest net increase: Its first-team total jumps from 34 to 43, but even so the firm's third-place finish is unchanged from last year. Citi jumps from No. 7 to No. 5 when firms are measured by this metric; it is home to 23 top-ranked analysts, seven more than last year.
