Globalstar Supports FCC Efforts to Relieve "Wi-Fi Traffic Jam"

Company to Discuss TLPS Proposal During a FierceWireless-Hosted Webinar, "Globalstar's New Wi-Fi Super Highway," on January 22

COVINGTON, La., Jan. 21, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Globalstar, Inc. (OTCBB:GSAT), today expressed its support for Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Genachowski's recent call to boost Wi-Fi Speed and Reduce Wi-Fi Congestion in order to spur further wireless innovation for an ever increasing mobile world. "As consumer adoption of wireless devices continues to soar, Wi-Fi congestion is becoming a critical problem for consumers and innovators," Chairman Genachowski said.

As announced in November, Globalstar has petitioned the FCC to obtain the regulatory flexibility necessary to use its licensed MSS spectrum terrestrially to support mobile broadband applications throughout the United States, including Wi-Fi. Globalstar's petition for rulemaking has received public comments, to which the company will officially respond on January 29th.

"Wi-Fi availability should never be the problem, but rather should be the solution to ensuring that consumers can stay connected and have a positive experience regardless of their increasingly crowded surroundings," said Jay Monroe, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Globalstar. "Participation and support from the wireless industry is needed to ensure that this Terrestrial Low Power Service is implemented successfully." Globalstar's Terrestrial Low Power Service ("TLPS") would maximize the wireless capacity available within the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical ("ISM") band where most Wi-Fi use currently exists, while causing no detrimental impact on other existing or future unlicensed uses in that band, including existing and future Wi-Fi use in Channel 11 and existing and future Bluetooth use throughout the 2.4 GHz ISM band. TLPS represents an opportunity for the manufacture and deployment of additional carrier-grade access points that will help eliminate the "critical problem" that Chairman Genachowski has identified.
