Finnair begins employee consultations in its Technical Operations, targeting a cost effective structure for the future

Finnair starts employee consultations in its Technical Operations organization on plans and alternatives to improve the efficiency of operations and adjust technical organization to changes made in 2012. In 2012, the size of Finnair’s operated fleet decreased and the company stopped offering maintenance services to external customers.

The plans for Technical Operations include:
- Possible outsourcing of the following activities: c-checks for narrow body aircraft, brake and wheel repairs and calibration laboratory
- Centralizing maintenance operations into three hangars to improve resource utilization

If implemented, the plans could result in a decrease of at most 310 positions from the 900 positions currently in Finnair Technical Operations.

Finnair has been discussing these plans with employee representatives for some weeks, with a view to find solutions for the reorganizing of operations. The discussions now continue within the employee consultation process.

”We understand that these plans are difficult for our personnel, but maintenance costs are one area where we have clear room for improvement”, says Finnair’s Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO Ville Iho.

”We will not compromise on quality and safety, but we are aiming to build an organization that can serve Finnair with high quality, cost-efficient technical services in the future. We believe that these plans will result in a structure and size that will serve us well for years to come.”

Finnair will offer re-employment support to impacted personnel with its Career Gate service, which is implemented in cooperation with employment authorities and other key stakeholders.

Finnair Technical Operations focuses on maintaining the airworthiness of the Finnair fleet and supporting Finnair’s flight operations. Last year Finnair outsourced its engine and component services to SR Technics.  Heavy maintenance of Airbus wide body aircraft has always been in the hands of Finnair’s audited maintenance partners in Asia.
