NeighborWorks America Moves to NoMa Neighborhood; Employees Mark Move by Volunteering with HandsOn Greater DC Cares at Walker Jones Education Campus

Move Highlights Organization's Mission to Revitalize Communities, Building Features Environmentally-Friendly Components

WASHINGTON, May 21, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NeighborWorks America will move its national headquarters to 999 North Capitol St. in the NoMa neighborhood May 28. NeighborWorks employees will celebrate the move by participating in a day of service at the nearby Walker Jones Education Campus on May 23. Staff will landscape and help cultivate an urban farm while providing other services to support the campus, which includes a Pre-K-8 school, community center, and public library.  NeighborWorks America, which creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities, supports a network of more than 235 nonprofits, located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Manna, Inc. is a NeighborWorks organization located in the District of Columbia.

The event will occur at Walker Jones Education Campus located at 1125 New Jersey Ave, NW, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in partnership with HandsOn Greater DC Cares, the leading and largest coordinator of volunteerism in the region. The campus is located just blocks from NeighborWorks America's new DC office.

"NeighborWorks America is looking forward to supporting and being part of our new community," said NeighborWorks America CEO Eileen Fitzgerald. "The revitalization of NoMa and its surrounding communities reflects our mission. Just as we helped to revitalize the neighborhood where we've spent the last 27 years, we will help create a vibrant community in our new neighborhood. A first step to make that happen is engaging our staff with the community."

"NeighborWorks America, another leading edge institution to move its flagship offices to NoMa, is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood," said NoMa Business Improvement District President Robin-Eve Jasper. "We welcome the NeighborWorks team to NoMa and look forward to working with them on community projects."

Notably, the new building is certified LEED Silver, and NeighborWorks America followed specific procedures to ensure the corporation earned a LEED Silver certification. The steps included energy and water use reduction; and using recycled content in materials, certified wood, and low-emitting materials for indoor air quality.

NeighborWorks America and its member organizations are committed to sustainable business practices, resulting in substantial savings and improving lives for thousands of low- and moderate-income families. The NeighborWorks Green Organization program defines green standards in specific lines of business and program areas; builds knowledge and capacity though training, peer learning, technical assistance and financial support; and recognizes the achievements of our network member organizations through the new NeighborWorks Green Organization designation. NeighborWorks America recently awarded 16 community organizations within its network a green designation based on a measurement of green business practices across their operations and all of their program areas.
